Did you know sickle cell patients are prone to having Deep Vein Thrombosis and Pulmonary embolism (blood clot in your lungs)?
I didn’t either, at least not until a few weeks ago when I developed one myself. I’ve often wondered why each time I was admitted into hospital for a sickle cell crisis, I was always given blood thinners.
But what is pulmonary embolism?
What symptoms does it cause?
What increases the risk of developing one
What are prevention and treatment?
Read on to find out.
When there is a blocked artery in your lungs, it causes a situation known as Pulmonary embolism?
Such a blockage is caused by a blood clot that forms in a deep vein in the leg (Try as much as possible to avoid sitting for a lengthy trip or lying in bed when you are just recovering from illness as these may cause your blood to cloth) and travels to the lungs, where it gets lodged in a smaller lung artery.
We have to be very careful as bone fractures or muscle tears can cause damage to blood vessels, leading to clots.
Now, the symptoms may include shortness of breath, chest pain, coughing up blood and the likes. I suffered all these symptoms after traveling for over 30 hours form China to Canada and this is what made me check into hospital.
