YELLOW EYES IN SICKLE CELL PATIENTS: CAUSE AND TREATMENT - PART 2

YELLOW EYES IN SICKLE CELL

Yellow eyes (Jaundice) is a common ailment of sickle cell disease. It occurs  when there’s a condition that affects the liver.

Sickle cells have a shorter lifespan than normal red blood cells. Due to that, they die faster than the liver can filter them. Bilirubin (a yellow compound) which is formed during the breakdown of cells builds up in the blood because the liver cannot excrete it. This causes yellow eyes (jaundice) in the sickle cell patient.

NATURAL CURE FOR JAUNDICE:

To treat jaundice, the underlying cause must be determined. Some natural remedies can be helpful in managing this condition. Some fruits, vegetables or essential oils contain antioxidants and antibiodies which breakdown bilirubin and help the liver function properly. Some of them are;

1.     Sugarcane Juice

 This contains antioxidants and important nutrients which are helpful in treating jaundice. Drinking sugarcane juice helps restore the function of the liver and keeps bilirubin levels in check. Drink 1-2 glasses of sugarcane juice daily.

2.     Rosemary Essential Oil

This has antioxidants and a hepatoprotective effect on the liver.  Mix 30ml of coconut oil with 12 drops of rosemary essential oil and massage on the abdomen.

Studies show that Resveratrol decreases bilirubin in the body and can be an effective remedy for acute jaundice. Resveratrol can be found in foods like; grapes, red and white wine, blueberries, cranberries, and even cocoa and dark chocolate.

9.     Vitamins A and E.

Deficiency in these vitamins is linked with the amount of hemolysis that occurs in adults with sickle cells disease.
